Ayurvedic Treatment for Transverse Myelitis
Transverse myelitis may be understood as a case of Urusthambha, with severe motor neuron deformity. So therapies to relieve spasticity along with rehabilitation are adopted. Rookshana therapy in the form of rooksha pinda sweda, valuka sweda etc is administered, which is used to pacify kapha and remove amatva(inflammation causing spasticity and occlusion). Following this lepana (application of warm poultices) and swedana (sudation) are advised all the while giving importance to rehabilitative physiotherapy. All these will ensure there is symptomatic relief from the condition and an improvement in quality of life of the patient.
As per the ayurvedic perspectives this condition is discussed under Avarana. The epidemiology is explained as function of the Vata gets obstructed by the obstructing dosha, which is in an aggravating state, due to its own contributory etiology. The initial stage may be associated with aama, which has to be strictly managed without fail. So even though it is vatika origin, the vata hara treatments are not done at first, the amatwa is managed and in nirama stage only vata hara treatment protocol is applied
- Internal medications
- Snehapana
- Virechana
- Sarvanga seka
- Swedana
- Nirooha followed by appropriate rasayana
This treatment protocol for transverse myelitis has been found effective.Vatha is the main dosha involved in the pathology of transverse myelitis.
In most cases, the pathophysiology is either Pitta or Kapha is found to be causing srodhoroda and thereby causing obstruction to function of vata due to the avarana. So, to relieve the obstruction and hence normalize Vatha, the initial management must be for Pitta or Kapha.
Snehana karma, swedana karma, sodhana karma (vamana and virechana) , vasthi followed by appropriate administration of selected rasayana is the line of treatment to be adopted for transverse myelitis.
