As the causes can vary a lot the treatment also differs. Most of the cases can be recovered by chiropractic/ manipulation, physiotherapy, internal medications, and exercises. A very few cases like a full-thickness tear of the rotator cuff, labrum, or advanced OA will require surgery.
In Ayurveda, the disease is explained as Apabahuka, Vishvachi, Khalili, Amsashosham and some cases of manyastambha related. All these diseases differ based on the involvement of doshas and the pattern of the symptoms.
Apabahukam – is very much similar to adhesive capsulitis features
Vishvachi – this condition is explained in Ayurveda classics in which the main feature is radiating pain from neck to fingers. Cervical Radiculopathy/brachial neuralgia can be compared to this disease.
Khalli – the same condition with severe pain is also mentioned with this name.
Amsashosham – a condition where there is a wasting of muscles as the main feature.
Treatment is Snehanam, swedanam, and nasyam mainly. Marma chikitsa is very effective in shoulder disorders. Special bandages with herbal paste are also helpful in healing and immobilization. Rakthamokshanam is the main line of treatment in such cases where there is avaranam.
