Effective Scoliosis Care at Maurya Hospital: Straightening the Path to Wellness

scoliosis

DEFINITION

‘Scoliosis’ is derived from the Greek word ‘skolios’ which means ‘crooked’.

 INTRODUCTION

Scoliosis is a common spinal condition characterized by an abnormal spine curvature. It can affect individuals of all ages.

What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves sideways in a C- or S-shaped curve. This deformity can occur in different parts of the spine, including the thoracic (upper), lumbar (lower), or thoracolumbar (mid-back) regions.

CAUSES

The exact cause of scoliosis is often unknown and can vary among individuals. However, some common causes and risk factors include:

  • Idiopathic Scoliosis

This is the most common type, which usually develops during adolescence without a known cause.

  • Congenital Scoliosis

This type is present at birth and is caused by abnormal spinal development in the womb.

  • Neuromuscular Scoliosis

It occurs as a result of underlying neuromuscular conditions such as Cerebral palsy or Muscular Dystrophy.

  • Degenerative Scoliosis

It develops in adulthood due to age-related changes in the spine, such as Degenerative Disc disease or Osteoarthritis.

SYMPTOMS

Scoliosis can be asymptomatic (without symptoms) in mild cases, making early detection challenging. However, as the curvature progresses, individuals may experience the following symptoms:

Uneven shoulder height Reduced mobility
Uneven waist or hip Breathing difficulties
Visible spine curvature Muscle Spasms
Back pain Numbness of the back

AYURVEDA TREATMENT

Ayurveda treatment at Maurya mainly focuses on therapies that promote a reduction in pain, stiffness, numbness, and muscle spasms. We have a team of excellent Ayurveda Physicians who easily handle such cases. The therapies vary from patient to patient, but we can give you a peek into the treatment procedures you can expect at Maurya Ayurveda Hospital.

1. Rooksha Vasti

Rooksha Vasti, an Ayurvedic medicinal treatment that involves administering herbal oils or decoctions through the rectum, can be good for the patients. While it does not immediately treat the spinal curvature, it does provide relief by lowering pain and inflammation associated with the condition. This treatment relieves pain by relaxing the muscles around the affected region, improving mobility, and promoting overall well-being.

2. Nasya

Nasya, an Ayurvedic therapy that involves the application of herbal oils or drugs through the nasal passages, can provide the patients with relief. While Nasya does not directly address spinal curvature, it does aid with symptoms linked with the illness. It helps to reduce pain, muscular tension, and inflammation, especially in the upper back and neck. Furthermore, relaxing effect on the nerve system can aid in stress reduction, providing a sense of well-being in the patient.

3. Ruksha Kizhi

  • Ruksha Kizhi involves the application of heated, dry herbal powders or herbal boluses to the body to get rid of pain, stiffness, and inflammation.
  • In Ruksha Kizhi, the herbal powders are typically dried and finely ground herbs with properties that provide a drying effect. This helps to deliver the therapeutic properties of the herbs and stimulate circulation, reduce pain, improve flexibility, and promote healing.

4. Elakizhi

Elakizhi offers potential relief by reducing pain and muscle tension associated with Scoliosis. The poultices, typically filled with herbal leaves and medicinal powders, are heated and applied to the affected areas, promoting relaxation and improving blood circulation.

5. Kashaya Dhara

Kashaya Dhara, an Ayurvedic therapy involving the continuous pouring of medicated herbal decoctions over the body, can provide relief to the patients as part of a holistic approach to symptom management. Kashaya Dhara offers potential benefits by reducing pain, inflammation, and muscle tension. The warm herbal decoctions used in this treatment promote relaxation and help soothe discomfort.

6. Pichu

  • Procedure where long, thick strips of cotton wool are soaked in warm medicated oil and placed over affected areas.
  • Pichu provides considerable relief from pain, numbness, and stiffness. Also, the medicated oils used for Pichu contain muscle-strengthening properties, thereby resulting in a considerable reduction of pain, numbness, and stiffness.

7. Greeva Vasti

In Greeva Vasti, warm medicated oil is retained in a well made of flour dough over the neck for a certain period of time. This mode of treatment is an excellent solution for the symptoms.

8. Kati Vasti

Similar to Greeva Vasti, in Kati Vasti, warm medicated oil is retained in a well made of flour dough over the lower back for a certain period of time. This procedure has proven beneficial for reducing pain, associated numbness, and inflammation.

PHYSIOTHERAPY

At Maurya Ayurveda Hospital, we offer specialized Physiotherapy programs tailored to individuals suffering from Scoliosis. Physiotherapists design personalized exercise programs to strengthen the muscles supporting the spine, improve flexibility, and enhance posture. These exercises, combined with manual therapy and postural training, can help reduce pain, improve spinal function, and enhance the overall quality of life for the patients.

ACUPUNCTURE

By inserting thin needles into specific acupuncture points, this ancient practice aims to alleviate pain, reduce muscle tension, and promote overall well-being. While acupuncture doesn’t correct the spinal curvature of the spine, it can provide relief from discomfort and improve the patient’s quality of life.
